Explorer Concerts

Dear Educators,

The Delaware Symphony Orchestra is pleased to announce the educational Explorer Concert Series for the 2010-2011 season. To reach more students in the state - we're bringing the DSO to Dover this season for our Explorer Concerts! These concerts are school-day, one hour long programs comprised of accessible, student-friendly classical favorites that provide an introduction to the orchestra and classical music. Students will have the unforgettable experience of hearing live music performed by a symphony orchestra.

Cirque Productions meets the Delaware Symphony!

  • The fall Explorer Concert, October 28, 2010 (10am and 12:30pm at the Chase Center on the Riverfront), is a combined musical and theatrical performance designed for students in fourth through eighth grades, although all students are most welcome and encouraged to attend.
  • Exotic music, colorful costumes, and flying, twisting, dancing bodies make this a can't-miss show that will open the eyes and ears of your students! Between the power of the DSO performing Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade, and the excitement of Cirque Productions, this is a perfect way to introduce 4th-8th graders to the thrill of live music and theater. A narrator will guide students through the entrancing 1001 Arabian Nights.

The Lost Elephant

  • Our spring Explorer Concert, April 5, 2011 at the Grand Opera House, and April 6, 2011 at the Schwartz Center in Dover. The magical mime, Dan Kamin, generates an incredible enthusiasm for live symphonic classical music. The program is designed for students in kindergarten through third grade, with musical fun planned for all ages.
  • Elmer the Elephant has escaped from the zoo, but the zookeeper is determined to track him down! Dan creates a jungle full of animals out of a few simple props and actions choreographed precisely to the music. This program is guaranteed to captivate even the youngest children, introducing them to classics like "Flight of the Bumblebee" and "William Tell Overture," along with great short pieces by Stravinsky, Shostakovich, Handel and others.

Tickets are $6.00 per student, with one free chaperone per ten students. Additional chaperone tickets are $6 each. A 25% deposit is necessary to reserve seats and payment in full is due the day of the concert. Please send your deposits for BOTH concerts now, because reservations are on a first come, first served basis. We sell out every year, so don't miss this chance!

On September 15, the Scheherazade Lesson Guide will be available for download. This guide is being prepared according to Delaware music, ELA, and social standards. It will be a fantastic way of preparing your students for the concert. Lesson plans will be offered with listening, technology and movement activities—don’t miss out!

With questions or for a reservation form, please contact Lisa Vaupel via email (lisav@delawaresymphony.org) or by phone at 302.656.7442, ext. 105.

· The Delaware Symphony also offers musician visits to schools through our DSO on the GO program. All programs are aligned with core-curriculum subject matter from the 3rd and 4th grade curriculum. Give your students an incredible musical experience, and the chance to gain a new perspective on material they study.
